It is therefor usefull to train your working dog at home. In this article we give you the best tips to train working dogs at home.
1. Be Consistent with Daily Training
Consistancy is very import for you and your dog ! This is why we think we should start with this tip. If you are consistennt with daily training, you and your dog will adjust to a rythm that will benefit most. Consistancy means:
Train at the same times each day
Keep sessions short and focused (5–15 minutes)
Example commands: sit, stay, release, heel
2. Reward Good Behavior with Positive Reinforcement
Reward good behavior with positive reinforcement is essential for succes. Punishment on the contrary may result in discouraging your dog. It might get very confused, not knowing what is right or what is wrong. Bad behavior goes with your voice. Your dog should learn that raising your voice means that he/she does something that you do not want.
Reward the dog with a kong or a toy. The dog will recoqnize fast that the reward will be given if a command is executed correctly.
A clicker can be used to signal the end of a training. After the clicker, the dog receives the reward.
Reward good behavior with treats, toys, or praise
Avoid punishment—it can confuse or discourage working breeds
Example method: clicker training
3. Keep Their Mind Active with Mental Challenges
What goes for people goes for working dogs as well. You will have to find ways to stimulate their mind.
Working dogs need mental exercise just as much as physical
Use puzzle toys, scent games, or training challenges
Introduce new tasks or variations weekly to prevent boredom
4. Increase Training Difficulty Gradually
Start with simple training and slowly increase the difficulty in your training. There is no purpose in starting very difficult trainings that your dog can not fulfill. Slowly building up the training process will make sure that your dog will grow in quality as well.
Start with simple commands and slowly add distractions or complexity
Example: train “stay” indoors, then try it outside with other dogs nearby
Prevent frustration by moving at your dog’s pace
5. Communicate Clearly and Stay Calm
Given clear commands is very important. Your dog will have to understand what is expected. That can only be achieved when the communication between handler and dog will always be clear. Besides clearness it is important to stay calm and also stay calm when your dog fails the exercise.
Use the same commands every time and pair with body language
Keep your tone and energy clear: low voice = serious, high voice = playful
Avoid mixing signals—dogs rely on your clarity
